Power Saving
Utility Manual
By using the Power Saving Utility, you can
easily switch your PC to power saving mode. The power saving mode reduces power
consumption, thereby extending battery life.
What you can do with
the Power Saving Utility
- You can switch between power saving mode and normal mode by
using the Power Saving Button.

screen.

- You can set up the actions for each device under power saving
mode.

Setting up
the power saving mode actions
In this window,
you set up the brightness of the display or power consumption level of each
device under power saving mode. You also can set up whether or not to display a
message on screen when you switch modes or when you start up under power saving
mode. When a device does not work properly, you can initialize the device from
this window.
- Right-click the
Power Saving Utility icon (
or
) in the
notification area at the bottom-right of the screen, and select
"Power saving mode settings". The [Power Saving Utility Setting]
window appears.
- Set up the desired
action for each device while the system is in power saving mode.
- Click the [Action
under power saving mode] cell for the device you want to set up.
- Click
to the right of
the selected cell, and then select what you want the device to do while
the system is in power saving mode.
- Use the check boxes
at the bottom of the window to indicate whether or not you want a message
to be displayed onscreen when you switch modes or when you start up under
power saving mode.
- "Display a message when system starts up in
power saving mode."
If you click
into
, the power saving setting for each device under power saving mode
is displayed when Windows starts up under power saving mode.
- "Display a confirmation message when
switching modes."
If you click
into
, setting status (restricted devices/functions) for each device
under power saving mode is displayed when switching normal mode to power saving
mode. Also, setting status (restriction removed device/function) for each
device under normal mode (free status) is displayed when switching power saving
mode to normal mode.
- "Display a message when mode switching has
failed."
If you click
into
, information for a device is displayed when switching of modes has
failed.
- "The ECO indicator turns on when battery
consumption is low."
If you click
into
, the ECO indicator turns on when battery consumption is low. This
function is effective only on products what have the ECO indicator.
- Click on the [OK]
button.

- Take the following actions in case a
device does not work properly after switching back to normal mode:
- Click
[Initializing device condition] button.
A window for switching confirmation appears.
Each device is initialized; power saving mode is cancelled and the
disabled device is enabled.
Power Saving Utility icon in notification area at bottom-right
of the screen turns into (Normal Mode).
[Power Saving Utility Setup] window is closed.

Switching
between Power Saving Mode and Normal Mode
You can switch between power
saving mode and normal mode using one of the following three methods:

|
- If a device is in use, switching of modes
must be done after using the device; otherwise the device may not shut
down properly.
|
|
Switching with Instant / Power Saving Button
- Press the Instant /
Power Saving button (certain models only).
Refer
to the system user's guide for the location of the Instant / Power Saving
button.
If you have selected to
"Display a confirmation message when switching modes" in accordance
with
"Setting
up the power saving mode actions", the
following confirmation message is displayed.

- If you unchecked "Display a
confirmation message when switching modes" in the Power Saving
Utility window, or you checked "Do not display this message
again" in this window, the window will not appear unless you
check the box in the Power Saving Utility window again.
|
|
- Click the [OK]
button.
A
progress indicator appears while switching modes.
When
mode is switched, the icon in notification area at bottom-right on the screen
will change:
- When
switching from power saving mode to normal mode:
-> 
- When
switching from normal mode to power saving mode:
-> 
Switching with the icon in the notification area at
bottom-right of the screen
- Right-click the
icon (
/
) in the
notification area at the bottom-right of the screen.
- Select
"Switching power saving mode" in the displayed menu.

- If you uncheck "Display a
confirmation message when switching modes" in Power Saving
Utility window, or you check "Do not display this message
again" in this window, the window will not appear unless you
check the box in Power Saving Utility window again.
|
|
- Click the [OK]
button.
A
progress indicator appears while switching modes.
When
mode is switched, the icon in the notification area at bottom-right on the
screen will change:
- When
switching from power saving mode to normal mode:
-> 
- When
switching from normal mode to power saving mode:

Switching with the start menu
- Press [Start] button and
select [All Programs]->[Power Saving Utility]->[Switching power saving mode].

- If you unchecked "Display a
confirmation message when switching modes" in the Power Saving
Utility window, or you checked the "Do not display this message
again" in this window, the window will not appear unless you
check the box in the Power Saving Utility window again.

- Click the [OK]
button.
A
progress indicator appears while switching modes.
When
mode is switched, the icon in the notification area at bottom-right on the
screen will change:
- When
switching from power saving mode to normal mode:

switching from normal mode to power saving mode:

If switching
fails
If you have selected to "Display
a message when mode switching has failed" in accordance with
"Setting
up the power saving mode actions", the
following confirmation message is displayed. When the message is displayed, you
can verify the information of the device that failed.
After confirming the contents, click
[OK].

- If you unchecked "Display a
message when mode switching has failed" in the Power Saving
Utility window, or you checked the "Do not display this message
again" in this window, the window will not appear unless you
check the box in the Power saving Utility window again.
|
|
When mode switching is done while
a device (e.g., S-Multi drive, CD/DVD drive) is in use, the following message
may appear on the screen:
When that happens, click the [OK]
button.
Switching the
condition of each device
Switch the
condition of each device from the icon in the notification area at bottom-right
of the screen.

|
- If a device is in use, switching of modes
must be done after using the device. Otherwise the device may not shut
down.
|
|
|
|
- Right-click the
icon(

area at bottom-right on the screen.
- Select the device
that you want to switch from the displayed menu, and choose the condition
that you want to set for the device.

- If you have selected to "Display a confirmation message
when switching modes" in accordance with
"Setting
up the power saving mode actions", the following confirmation message is
displayed.

- If you unchecked "Display a
confirmation message when switching modes" in the Power Saving
Utility window, or you checked the "Do not display this message
again" in this window, the window will not appear unless you
check the box in the Power saving Utility window again.

- Click the [OK]
button.
A
progress indicator appears while switching modes.

When
the device condition is switched, the icon in notification area at bottom-right
of the screen will change:
- When
switching all device conditions to normal mode:

- When
switching one or more device conditions to power saving mode:

· Note that when switching certain devices
from power saving to normal mode, the icon in the notification area may not
change to the normal icon. If that should occur, please return to the
normal mode as directed in
"Switching
between Power Saving Mode and Normal Mode".

If switching
fails
If you have selected to
"Display a message when mode switching has failed" in accordance with
"Setting
up the power saving mode actions", the
following confirmation message is displayed. When the message is displayed, you
can verify the information about the device that failed.
After confirming the contents, click
[OK].

- If you unchecked "Display a
message when mode switching has failed" in the Power Saving
Utility window, or you checked the "Do not display this message
again" in this window, the window will not appear unless you
check the box in the Power saving Utility window again.

When mode switching is attempted
while a device (e.g., S-Multi drive, CD/DVD drive) is in use, the following
message may appear on the screen:

When that happens, click the [OK] button.
Confirm the
device condition
Confirm the condition of each
device using the icon in the notification area at the bottom-right of the
screen. You can also switch the device condition using this method.

|
- If a device is in use, finish using it
before switching modes for it, otherwise it may not shut down.
|
|
|
|
- Right-click the
icon(
or
) in the
notification area at the bottom-right on the screen.
- Select
"Display the present device condition" in the displayed menu.
The current device conditions are displayed.
- If you simply want to see the device conditions without
changing them, click [Cancel] when you are done. The window closes.
- If you want to change the device
condition(s), perform the following procedure:
Set up the device condition for each device.
- Click the [Device
condition] cell for the device(s) you want to change.

- Click
and select
the condition you want to change it to.

- Click the [OK]
button.
- If you have
selected to "Display a confirmation message when switching
modes" in accordance with
"Setting
up the power saving mode actions", the following confirmation message is
displayed.

- If you unchecked "Display a
confirmation message when switching modes" in the Power Saving
Utility window, or you checked the "Do not display this message
again" in this window, the window will not appear unless you
check the box in the Power Saving Utility window again.

- Click the [OK]
button.
A

When
the device condition is switched, the icon in the notification area at
bottom-right on the screen is changed:
- When
switching all device conditions to normal mode:

· Note that when switching certain devices

If PC starts up under
power saving mode
If you shut down the PC while in
power saving mode, it will start up under power saving mode and a limitation
window displaying the state of each device is displayed.
After confirming the contents,
click [OK].

- If you unchecked "Display a
message when system starts up in power saving mode" in the Power
Saving Utility window, or you checked the "Do not display this
message again" in this window, the window will not appear unless
you check the box in the Power saving Utility window again.

Precautions
- Even though the PC may be used under
multiple user accounts, the power saving mode has only one setting per PC.
Therefore, if another user logs on to the PC with another user account
while under power saving mode, the PC will retain the current power saving
mode.
- Mode switching can be performed only in accordance with the
methods instructed in this manual. Changing the PC's state to
Standby/Resume/Hibernation or Reboot/Logoff will not automatically change
the present mode.
- If the hardware condition is changed intentionally after or
during mode switching, this software does not reset the hardware settings.
